Anne Arundel County Scholarship Program Awards $3M to Outstanding Scholars

Scholarships For Scholars Celebrates 35th Year of Recognizing Academic Excellence

Scholarships for Scholars, Inc. announced today that they have awarded over $3M in scholarships to over 900 graduating high school seniors since its inception in 1983. The program recognizes Anne Arundel County students who demonstrate exceptional scholastic achievement overall and in subjects like STEM, English, social studies, and the arts. On April 30, the organization granted over $160,000 to 30 outstanding students representing 11 high county schools. Each student received scholarships from $2,000 to $8,000 and was honored at a ceremony and reception at the Chesapeake Arts Center.

The ceremony, run by the trustees themselves, also featured distinguished representatives from organizations presenting various individual awards. These sponsors included the Anne Arundel Retired School Personnel Association, Cristal USA, Crosby Marketing, South Anne Arundel County Rotary, and The Morris Family. Guest speaker, Dr. Maureen McMahon, Deputy Superintendent for Academics and Strategic Initiatives of Anne Arundel County Public Schools, praised the winners’ achievements and standards of excellence.

Aidan Wang, of Severn School, received the top overall award – the Edward J. Anderson Scholarship, named in honor of the program’s founder – for the most outstanding application of the year. Mr. Wang is an AP Scholar with Distinction; a national Latin scholar; a mathematician; a tutor in Latin, chemistry, mathematics and the SAT; an actor in his school productions and a pianist since he was five. He is the captain of two of his school’s academic teams, a member of several honor societies, and has won numerous academic honors, both locally and nationally. He is also a valued volunteer docent at the William Paca House. Mr. Wang is headed to Brown University this fall.

“It is such a privilege to provide these awards on behalf of the Board of Trustees and our partner sponsors. Listening to the individual bios of these student exemplars, I was awestruck by their impressive academic and civic accomplishments. They fill us with pride today and with hope and optimism for the future,” said Mary Santonastasso Hagerty, Chairman, Board of Trustees.

Applications for 2019 graduates will be available after October 15, 2018 at www.scholarshipsforscholars.org.
